Either way, you’re curious about the person behind those words, and you might even want to discover more of their work.
Many websites make that easy by showing the writer’s name, sometimes with a photo and a link to learn more about them. You might find this information near the top of the article or in a short biography at the end, where readers can discover more about the writer and their work.
This short biography is called an author bio. When it includes a link to the writer’s own website, that link becomes an author bio backlink for the writer’s site.
But beyond helping readers discover the writer, can this kind of backlink also have SEO value? The answer depends on how the link is used and why it was included, not simply on its appearance in an author bio.
Does Every Author Profile Link Count as a Backlink?
Some publications link a writer’s name to a profile page on the same website. That page might show their photograph, background, and other articles they’ve written.
This is an internal link because it connects two pages within the same website.
Now suppose the writer also has a personal website where readers can explore their portfolio. If the publication includes a link to that external website in the author’s biography, the writer’s site receives a backlink.
The distinction is useful because not every clickable author name represents a backlink to another website.
Can Author Bio Links Help Google Identify Writers?
Links associated with authors can help connect an article to information about the person who wrote it.
Google’s documentation for Article structured data recommends a property called author.url. This allows website publishers to specify a webpage that uniquely identifies the author, such as a biography, personal profile, or social media page.
Structured data is information added to a webpage’s code to help search engines understand its content.
However, author.url and a visible author bio backlink are not the same thing. One is information provided in the page’s structured data, while the other is a clickable link that visitors can follow.
Google recommends author information to help its systems identify writers.
What If the Author Bio Backlink Comes From a Guest Post?
Guest articles often include a short biography so readers can learn about the person contributing to the publication.
A writer might contribute an article to an industry magazine, and the publication may include a link to the writer’s professional website. That link has an understandable purpose: helping readers identify the contributor and explore their work.
But problems can arise when guest articles are published primarily to obtain backlinks that manipulate search rankings.
Google’s spam policies specifically address manipulative link arrangements, including certain uses of optimized anchor text in guest posts distributed across other websites.
A genuine author biography is not automatically suspicious, just as including a link in one does not automatically make that link acceptable under Google’s policies.
If a link is part of a paid or sponsored arrangement, it should also be appropriately qualified, such as with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".
Do Author Bio Backlinks Improve SEO Rankings?
An author bio backlink can be useful even without a measurable ranking benefit. It allows interested readers to visit the writer’s website, discover more of their work, or learn about their professional background.
Whether it also contributes to search rankings is less certain. Google does not provide a fixed value for backlinks appearing in author biographies, and the presence of a link in that section does not establish how its ranking systems will evaluate it.
The clearest reason for including an author bio link is to help readers connect an article with the person who created it. Any potential SEO benefit should be considered separately from that purpose.
